When the other cats hunt birds and mice, Dexter, 9, fights for the environment.

In recent years, the cat has picked up hundreds of liters of rubbish in Österskär.

– People call him the new Greta, says owner Fredrik Weisten.

The cat Dexter, 9, is not like other cats. When the other pets in Österskär collect birds and mice, Dexter helps to improve the environment.

For the past five years, Dexter has picked up hundreds of liters of rubbish in the local area.

– I was quite tired of him when he came dragging birds and mice. One day he came home with an ice cream wrapper and I was so happy. Now he doesn’t get scolded anymore. He picks up trash everywhere and puts it on our balcony, says owner Fredrik Weisten, 50.

After Fredrik and his wife Susanne Ekendahl Weisten, 51, discovered Dexter’s new hobby, they decided to set up a camera over the balcony to film the pet’s adventures.

– He comes howling and then he has something in his mouth. We take the trash and put it in a black garbage bag that holds 125 liters. It is almost full in a year, so there is a lot of rubbish, says Fredrik.

Has he stopped coming with birds and mice?

– It still happens, but not as often. He likes dirty things that rustle.

“People call him the new Greta”

Fredrik has posted a film on Dexter’s environmental work on Facebook. The comments have been numerous and encouraging.

– We have received so many comments. People call him the new Greta and others wonder why not everyone can do that, he says.

Fredrik and Susanne’s house in Österskär is close to a bathing area. Dexter spends a lot of time there and often finds something to pick up.

– People leave everything there, he says.

Dexter is the oldest of the family’s three cats. Spencer and Gracie are a few years younger and have yet to start fighting for the environment.

– They haven’t learned how to collect rubbish yet.
