The car test raises the alarm about A-tractors – “worrying”

The car test raises the alarm about A tractors worrying

In 2018, inspection requirements were introduced for A tractors.

They must now be inspected for the first time 48 months after the first inspection, and then every 24 months.

The car test is now releasing the inspection statistics for A-tractors for the third year in a row, which they describe as “disturbing”.

The number of A tractors is increasing rapidly

The number of A tractors has more than doubled in the last four years, and there are now around 56,000 in Sweden.

This after a rule change in 2020 that made it easier to build A-tractors from more modern cars.

More and more of the vehicles have errors and deficiencies in the inspection that require a follow-up check, according to the statistics of the Swedish Vehicle Testing Agency.

6 out of 10 require follow-up

Of the 4,000 A tractors that Bilprovningen inspected in 2024, more than 7 out of 10, more precisely 72.5 percent, had defects.

Almost 6 out of 10, more precisely 57 percent, of the A tractors had such serious defects that a follow-up inspection was required.

A defect that requires a follow-up inspection is so serious that the vehicle must not be used more than necessary before the defect has been rectified and an inspector has assessed that the defect has been rectified.

Most deficiencies in Kronoberg county

The most common source of defects that require follow-up on A-tractors is, just like on ordinary passenger cars, components of the braking system, followed by the wheel system.

The county in Sweden with the highest proportion of A tractors that required a follow-up inspection in 2024 was Kronoberg, with 70.7 percent. The county where the A tractors are in the best mechanical condition is Jönköping, where 43.4 percent required a follow-up inspection.

The car test also notes that it is common to make unauthorized changes to A-tractors.

– During the inspection, we find that A-tractors are often modified compared to other vehicle types. Examples of this are that the design has been changed so that the vehicle goes faster than the permitted maximum speed of 30 km/h or has been expanded with more passenger seats, says Per-Anders Blommeforsinspection manager at Bilprovningen.
