The calls can last until 2026

Peace negotiations between the United States and Russia can last until 2026.
It says the Russian negotiator
Grigorij Karasin, chairman of the Senate Committee on international issues.
– It would have been naive to expect some breakthroughs, says Grigorij Karasin.

On Monday, new peace talks were held between the United States and Russia in the Saudi capital Riyad. The agenda included discussions about a break in attacks against energy plants and civil infrastructure in both countries, as well as attacks in the Black Sea.

The Russian negotiator Grigorij Karasin initially described the conversations as “useful”, but on Friday night the tone was sharper.

-It would have been naive to expect some breakthroughs, says Karasin in an interview with the state-owned broadcaster Russia-24, reports Moscow Times.

Karasin warned at the same time that the conversations can drag out over time and last until next year.

Different views on the agreement

The proposals for measures that the US negotiators first presented during the meeting in Riyad on Monday have been described from Russian as unacceptable. Russia and Ukraine have had different views on what is included in the agreement and have accused each other of undermining the agreement.

US Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said on Thursday that it is up to Russia when talks at a higher level can take place.

On the same day, the White House stated that Russia and Ukraine, in separate conversations with the United States, agreed on a ceasefire in the Black Sea. However, Moscow was quickly out, claiming that a number of conditions – including sanctioning – must be fulfilled before such a ceasefire can come into force.

This week, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed that a UN-led administration could take over the board in Ukraine before any peace agreement is signed. The proposal has been dismissed by the White House.
