The call to Fifa: Raise the prize money in the World Cup: “Work for equality”

With three days to go until the World Cup premiere, Australia’s squad published a clip via the players’ union where they pointed out that the prize money is about a quarter compared to the men’s World Cup in Qatar last year.

“There are still no guarantees that it will be equal,” said Australia’s former captain Kathryn Gill who is now president of the Australian Players Union.

That’s how high the compensation is – in the football World Cup

Fifa has increased the prize money for the Women’s World Cup. In total, the International Football Association will pay out the equivalent of just over SEK 1.8 billion.

All WC players are guaranteed around SEK 326,000 ($30,000) just for playing in the group stage. If you go all the way and win gold, additional money awaits, 270,000 dollars, just under three million kroner.

In the men’s WC, the total sum was 440 million dollars, just over 4.5 billion kroner.

“The money has increased, but it’s still a quarter of what the men get. Even though Fifa says it’s working for equality, we still haven’t received any guarantees that it will actually be equal,” says Kathryn Gill.

Australia face Ireland in the World Cup opener in Sydney on Thursday.
