It is not only meetings, caravans or political rallies, such as electoral campaigns, which are now prohibited in Touba. The Caliph General of the Mourides also decided to “ close its doors » to the candidates for the presidential election on February 25.

According to its spokesperson who announced these measures, “ the Caliph General is too busy to receive the various candidates who would like to visit him », visits that politicians often request during the pre-election campaign, in particular to have the blessing of the man of God.

Serigne Abdou Mbacké Doli, native of Touba and candidate for the next presidential election, believes that the religious city benefits from a special status. In this case, we must comply with the instructions of the owner of Touba who is, he recalls, “ a land title which belongs to Serigne Touba “.

The Caliph had raised the possibility of banning voting in the religious city but, ultimately, he reversed this decision a few months before the presidential election so as not to disturb voters already registered.
