The Palestinian Authority’s chief prosecutor, Akram al-Khatib, told the AFP news agency that the bullet had been handed over to forensic experts in the United States for investigation.
The bullet has not been tampered with, says al-Khatib. When the examination is completed, it must be returned.
It was on May 11 that 51-year-old Shireen Abu Akleh, an experienced correspondent for Al Jazeera, was killed by a shot to the head during an Israeli raid in the city of Jenin, despite the fact that she was wearing a safety vest with the word “press” on it.
According to investigations by the UN human rights body OHCHR and several respected media, including the news agency AP and The New York Times, the shot was fired by Israeli security forces.
The Israeli army IDF says it is “impossible to determine” where the shot came from and that it could just as easily have been fired by Palestinians in the area. According to the OHCHR, there is no indication that armed Palestinians were active in the incident.
