Ships of the Russian shadow fleet are registered in the system and it alerts if they approach critical infrastructure, such as electricity, gas or telecommunications connections.
The JEF group of states led by Britain has activated a system that uses artificial intelligence to warn of threats to underwater connections in the Baltic Sea. According to the press release announced by the British government as an epiphany, the Nordic Warden operation, which uses artificial intelligence, started last week.
Ships of Russia’s so-called shadow fleet are registered in the system and it alerts if they approach critical infrastructure, such as electricity, gas or telecommunications connections. The system distributes the warning among all ten JEF countries.
British Defense Secretary of John Healey according to the new innovative system offers an unprecedented ability to monitor large areas with relatively small resources.
– Nordic Warden helps to protect against both intentional sabotage and acts of gross negligence that have damaged submarine cables, Healey says in the release.
According to JEF’s own press release published as an epiphany, the new control measures complement national and NATO measures already started or planned to protect critical infrastructure. JEF also commends the “decisive actions” of Finland and Estonia in responding to the damage to the Estlink 2 power cable.
In addition to Britain, JEF includes the Nordic and Baltic countries and the Netherlands.
