Last year, data on emissions and consumption from cars registered from 1 January 2021 onwards began to be collected.
The data, which is collected in connection with the cars being serviced, repaired or inspected, makes it possible to keep statistics on how much fuel the cars actually consume.
Now this data from 600,000 cars has been released by the European Environment Agency, and based on this the We Car Owners compiled which car brands build the most frugal diesel cars.

Diesel cars from Peugeot and Citroën are frugal
According to Vi Bilägare’s calculations, the most fuel-efficient diesel cars are manufactured by Peugeot and Citroën, which have been combined as the two sister brands are not always reported separately in the statistics.
The real average consumption for diesel cars from Peugeot and Citroën is 5.6 liters per 100 kilometers. This corresponds to a 16 percent higher consumption than the official figures, which is a figure that is also matched by Volkswagen.
However, the diesel cars from Mazda and Hyundai perform slightly better in terms of the difference between official and real consumption, with a difference of 15 percent.
In absolute terms, however, the brands have significantly higher consumption than the diesel cars from Peugeot and Citroën. Mazda’s diesel cars draw 7.1 liters per 100 kilometers, while the corresponding figure for Hyundai is 6.5 liters per 100 kilometers.
