In Amazon’s superhero satire The Boys, death is omnipresent and characters are dying like flies. However, in most cases it is almost exclusively new characters who are affected. Season 4 is a huge exception. In the latest episode, a star who has been there since the very first episode is bid farewell.

Simon Pegg as Hugh Campbell Sr. in The Boys
Almost all deaths in The Boys take place in an extremely exaggerated and brutal way. But with Hugh Campbell Sr., things are a little different. Instead of a crude and violent death, the series bids farewell to Hughie’s (Jack Quaid) father with a touching and emotional scene.
Admittedly: Hugh Campbell’s story doesn’t end without some WTF momentsAfter Hugh was declared brain dead following a stroke, he was transformed into a Supe using Compound V and revived – with drastic consequences. Hugh suddenly has the superpower to teleport and phase through objects like the DC superhero The Flash.
Due to the brain damage he suffered, Hugh is now severely demented and no longer recognizes his own son. It is a dangerous combination. Hugh’s state of confusion coupled with his super strength causes a massacre in the hospital, as he teleported uncontrollably into other people and kills her. His son sees only one option: He must put his father out of his misery and kill him.
And so Hugh Sr. is put to sleep in the presence of his son and his ex-wife (Rosemarie DeWitt). With the words “My wee Hughie” and thus a touching reference to the name of the character in Garth Ennis’ comic book, he peacefully passes away.
For fans of the graphic novel, the departure of Simon Pegg is especially sad. The British actor was once the inspiration for the character Hughie Campbell.
