Niklas Wikegård is ready for Djurgården Hockey.
The TV profile returns to the club as sporting director.
– Now both the time and opportunity are absolutely right, says Wikegård on Djurgården’s website.
Rumors began to come during Tuesday morning that Niklas Wikegård approached Djurgården. Shortly thereafter, it was also official, and the television profile was presented by the club as the new sporting director.
Wikegård returns
Wikegård will take up his new position on May 1.
– I have followed hockey through all the years that have passed since I was last an active coach and probably thought 1000 times about giving myself back in. Now both the time and the opportunity are absolutely right and it feels very fun to be able to do something together with all Djurgården residents, he says to Djurgården’s website.

Wikegård thus returns to the Stockholm club, after previously being a coach at the club for two stays.
– Niklas is a hugely experienced hockey person with a wide network of contacts and a good view of hockey. In our conversations, we have talked a lot about values, attitude and approach, as well as how we see DIF Hockey’s sporting development as a whole. Here I feel that we share the same picture and we will work well together in the future, says Djurgården Hockey’s CEO Matthias Sånemyr.
Reveals the job duties
Between the coaching job and his new employment, Wikegård has acted as a studio expert and expert commentator for TV4’s hockey broadcasts, and is also appreciated on social media. The last time the 60-year-old coached a club was 04/05, when he coached Djurgården.

Now a completely new role awaits Wikegård.
– My task will be to use all the power that exists in and around “Djurgår’n”, channel it in the right way and find a way forward for the whole association. It feels incredibly exciting and something that is new to me. At the same time, I have a habit both as a hockey coach, from the years in the TV industry and from building companies. I believe that the accumulated experience will be of help to me, although of course I have the greatest respect for this new assignment, he told the club’s website.
