A man placed an explosive device in a well-visited neighborhood in central Warsaw on Monday, Polish authorities say.
A 31-year-old man has been arrested and according to prosecutor Aleksandra Skrzyniarz, he took the explosive charge out of a bag and placed it on the sidewalk in an area near Warsaw’s older city center and the presidential palace, where many people are in circulation.
An event with 300 participants was held at the site to commemorate Polish victims of World War II, when police intervened, arrested the man and evacuated the area. A bomb squad then removed the explosive device. It is not clear how the charge was noticed.
The investigation is awaiting information from explosives experts on how much damage the charge could have done if it had detonated. The suspect will be questioned.
