The report was produced on behalf of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce. The analysis and technology consulting company WSP has calculated how large investments are required for the transport infrastructure linked to NATO membership. It mentions, among other things, that NATO primarily sees Sweden as a transit country for the transport of troops and war material.
There are six routes that are designated as particularly important, where, among other things, the E18 and the railway between Oslo-Karlskoga-Stockholm and the railway between Kristinehamn-Östersund-Gällivare are some of the routes. They are considered extra priority in order to integrate Sweden into NATO’s joint defense planning.
Socioeconomic effects
In addition to the improved defense capability, WSP has also calculated the socio-economic effects, which are estimated to amount to SEK 129 billion. Above all, by shortening travel times and lowering transport costs for leisure and business trips.
– An investment in, for example, Stockholm-Oslo would mean a lot for Värmland but also, as we see in this report, all of Sweden and also Norway, says Hans Albrektsson.
