When Iron Man laid the foundation for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, no one could have guessed where it would go. 21 films later, Avengers 4: Endgame was not only the massive end point of the Infinity Saga, but also the absolute highlight of the MCU: According to Box Office Mojo, the Avengers adventure grossed almost $2.8 billion and became the most successful superhero film of all time. Today it’s on TV.
The Marvel blockbuster Avengers 4: Endgame makes half the universe despair
After Avengers 3: Infinity War left Marvel fans worldwide with an unbelievable cliffhanger, the direct sequel now finds half the universe in mourning. The other half was wiped out by supervillain Thanos (Josh Brolin) using the six Infinity Stones.
The remaining Avengers are faced with a hopeless situation. Because the Titan’s deed cannot be undone. After a time jump of 5 years, there is suddenly hope again that the destroyed stones can somehow be regained. Be careful, follow it spoiler!

The solution: an epic time travel hunt for the Infinity Stones at different points in Marvel history. However, it doesn’t go smoothly and brings one of the most tragic losses in MCU history out. To obtain the Soul Stone on the planet Vormir, a human sacrifice must be made. And of all people it hits Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).
Endgame says goodbye to 3 Avengers, but Black Widow deserves better
As the (premature) conclusion to a 21-film-long saga, Endgame is not only an incredibly epic climax, but also an extremely emotional one Farewell performance for the Avengers Black Widow, Iron Man and Captain America. And herein lies a problem that continues to frustrate Marvel fans to this day.
While the farewells of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) became unforgettable MCU highlights, the impact of Natasha Romanoff’s tragic sacrifice evaporates after just a few minutes and hardly plays a role in the film. After all, the MCU’s most massive superhero battle is about to take place shortly afterwards.
Especially compared to her fellow Avengers, the way Black Widow’s death was dealt with was very unfortunate. At the end of the film, when numerous Avengers and allies gather to mourn the loss of Tony Stark, it becomes clear that Black Widow was never an equal member of the ranks of heroes was.
Of course, we’ll see Natasha again in the delayed prequel film Black Widow. However, the return in the prequel hardly consoles the fact that the character we followed for three MCU phases deserved a more worthy farewell.
