“The biggest setback I’ve had”

Elvira Öberg had the biggest setback of her career last season.
Now the biathlete gives a new statement of form.
– Recognize the body as I want, says Öberg to Radiosporten.

Before the World Cup in Oberhof 2023 var Elvira Öberg, 24, in great shape. During the season, she took six podiums in the World Cup, three of which were victories. As it approached departure for Oberhof, Elvira was thus Sweden’s biggest medal hope.

Öberg’s tough WC

But after the championship’s first competition, the sprint race, the ski association announced that Öberg had fallen ill with a cold. And it turned out to be a stubborn one. Elvira subsequently missed the start of the hunt and the distance race. She finally got healthier and was able to participate in the relay, where Öberg together with her older sister Hanna Öberg and the rest of the Swedish women’s biathlon national team could take a bronze.

The bronze in the relay meant Elvira’s first WC medal. When it was time for the final race of the championship in the form of the mass start, she decided to stand over the competition. The reason was that she felt tired after the relay and didn’t want to risk anything for the rest of the season. But it was a tough decision for Öberg.

Especially since, at the same time that Elvira was having an incredibly tough time, it was going brilliantly for Hanna Öberg. The older sister took two golds, a silver and a bronze during the championship.

Elvira’s comeback

Elvira has subsequently admitted that she was unable to attend Hanna’s golden celebration, and left the event early. Despite the WC bronze, little sister Öberg left the championship disappointed. That’s how she also looks back on that time.
– Both the WC and then what followed after the WC, I would say that is the biggest setback I have had so far in my career, says Elvira Öberg in Radiosporten.

When the new season starts soon, the 24-year-old will be in good spirits and in good shape.
– I’ve had a good summer that way. I’ve been getting into it better and better as time goes by really. As of the end of July, I have really, truly recognized the body that I want. The last two months have been very, very good, says Elvira Öberg.
