A man, his talking teddy bear and a lot of crude humor: With Ted, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane created a cult comedy in 2012, which was continued in 2015 with Ted 2. Both films grossed over $766 million at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo.
After almost 9 years, the Thunder Buddies are back. However, not with Ted 3, but with the prequel series Ted. This tells the story of the teddy bear who later became a sex and drug addict plenty of R-rated humor, 90s nostalgia and a surprising amount of heart. The series starts tomorrow in prime time on ProSieben.
Starting tomorrow on ProSieben: The Ted series takes you back to the 90s as a rough family sitcom
The plot of Ted jumps back to 1993 and is presented as a flashy family sitcom. In an episodic format, we follow the different and always chaotic everyday experiences of the Bennett family from Framingham, Massachusetts. This also includes a stuffed bear named Ted who was brought to life eight years ago by a wish from a shooting star.

The Bennetts’ house blessing keeps going wrong. In particular, the choleric and latently racist dad Matty (Scott Grimes) and the politically liberal cousin Blaire (Giorgia Whigham) fight each other every day, while mom Susan (Alanna Ubach) naively stares into the area with her distorted facial expression.
And in the middle of the chaos (and often to blame for it) are John (Max Burkholder as young Mark Wahlberg) and Ted, who go to high school together, discover marijuana for the first time and have a lot of nonsense on their minds.
Admittedly, my memories of the Ted films have almost completely faded over the years. My expectations for the prequel were correspondingly low, and as a fan of Seth MacFarlane’s series Family Guy, American Dad and The Orville, I wanted to give it a chance. It needed Only a few minutes until I had a stomach ache from laughing.
Surprise! The Ted series is really funny
The biggest surprise: Ted has lost none of his rough, biting humor, which is refreshing especially in today’s sea of tame comedy series. Just imagine a live-action adaptation of Family Guy (even the musical score is the same) and you’ll get an idea of Ted’s slapstick fireworks shooting in all directions.

The fantastic dynamic between the teenager and CGI teddy is the highlight of the series. Things sometimes get completely weird when Ted and John make plans to rent porn from the video store. Or unexpectedly emotional when, after a prank phone call, they suddenly develop fatherly feelings for their hated school tormentor.
Ted and John regularly (and often drunk) lose themselves in their escalating fantasies and inspire each other with creative brain farts. It’s not uncommon for simple conversations to drift into unexpectedly bizarre directionsfor example, when the duo suddenly philosophises about sexist tendencies in cannibalism in the school hallway.
As a series set in 2024, Ted looks at the ’90s setting with a modern sensibility and breaks stereotypes in a very funny way. An example: Ted accompanies John’s cousin to a private invitation from her English professor. The bear is convinced that the teacher actually just wants to get into her laundry. To his surprise and ours, something completely different is the case: Suddenly the professor in a bear costume stands in front of Ted and wants to him seduce.
All in all, Ted is a surprisingly funny and heartwarming feel-good comedy with compelling characters that I could watch for hundreds of episodes. That is at the same time my only criticism that I have to level with Ted: The series only consists of 7 episodes. And a second season has not yet been ordered.

The comedy series starts on February 12, 2024 at ProSieben. It starts at 8:15 p.m. with the pilot, which was split into two episodes for German broadcast.
