After controversial final The fantasy series and a failed HBO project called Confederate, however, things became surprisingly quiet around the duo.
With the start of 3 Body Problem, the two are finally back with a new series this week. The ambitious sci-fi epic was created under the umbrella of Netflix. Weiss and Benioff were not alone at work. To adapt the complex template, they teamed up with Alexander Woo (The Terror).
Gigantic sci-fi epic: The Game of Thrones makers are bringing Cixin Liu’s 3 Body Problem to Netflix
The story of 3 Body Problem is based on the novel of the same name by the Chinese writer Cixin Liu, which was published in this country under the title The Three Suns and forms the start of the so-called Trisolaris trilogy. This also includes the books The Dark Forest and Beyond Time.

Liu tackles one of the most exciting sci-fi questions of all: Is there somewhere out there in space extraterrestrial life? In 3 Body Problem, humanity learns the answer as early as the 1960s, when astrophysicist Ye Wenjie witnesses first contact during the Chinese Cultural Revolution.
One actually exists on the distant planet Trisolaris, which has three suns orbiting it intelligent species. However, due to the chaotic orbit of the three suns, the conditions on Trisolaris are terrible, so the prospect of a new habitable planet is very convenient for the aliens.
People have 400 years to prepare for this impending invasion of the Trisolarians – then the first ships of the all-powerful fleet will land on Earth. Based on this premise, an epic science fiction story unfolds that spans numerous characters and time levels.
3 Body Problem even surpasses Game of Thrones: Netflix has high hopes for the sci-fi epic
Netflix spared no expense or effort with 3 Body Problem. There is a budget of per episode $20 million went into production, as the Wall Street Journal reports. To put that into perspective: Not even Game of Thrones was that expensive. The final season cost per episode only $15 million.
Netflix has high hopes for the project, positioning 3 Body Problems as one of the biggest Series blockbuster 2024. My colleague Max reveals in his series check whether it’s worth taking a look at large-scale production. In his conclusion he writes:

3 Body Problem starts on March 21, 2024 on Netflix. The first season includes a total of eight episodes, all of which will be available to stream from launch day. Thanks to the template, there is also plenty of material for further seasons. However, the series has not yet been officially extended. For now, the debut round has to be convincing at the start.
