Christmas time is fantasy and musical time, at least when it comes to Wicked. The musical adventure from the world of the Wizard of Oz is one of them most elaborate fantasy productions of recent years. This is due, on the one hand, to the immensely popular original and, on the other hand, to the detailed sets that director Jon M. Chu and his team had built to resurrect the fantasy world. Wicked tells the story of a famous villain
Wicked is based on the musical of the same name, which premiered in 2003 and has since grossed approximately $1.6 billion in ticket sales. The idea behind it is: Take a famous figure from literary and film history, in this case this Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Ozand tell their story.
In the film version, Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba, the later villain who is misunderstood as a young woman because of her green skin. Actress and pop star Ariana Grande stars as Glinda, who is so adored. The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastic land of Oz and form an unlikely friendship. However, after an encounter with the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum), the two reach a crossroads and their lives take very different paths.
The fantasy two-parter starts in December
The director is Jon M. Chu, who made a name for himself with Step Up 2 and 3 and most recently demonstrated his affinity for musicals in In the Heights. For the adaptation of the bewitched stage hit, Winnie Holzman, who was responsible for the original Wicked libretto, worked with The Lost City screenwriter Dana Fox. Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh (as the headmistress) and Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey (as the prince) also appear in roles.
The adaptation is planned as a large fantasy two-parter. Wicked opens in German cinemas on December 12, 2024. Wicked – Part 2 will follow on November 20, 2025.
