One of the big winners on Twitch in 2022 is former CS:GO pro Tarik “tarik” Celik (26). Now he’s making a career with Valorant, following in the footsteps of the “shooter god” Michael “shroud” Grzesiek (28).
Who is that anyway?
Sentinels already caused a stir in 2022 with the comeback of the “human aimbot” shroud. At 28, he really wanted to know it again. You can read about how that went here.
The huge hype about the comeback of Twitch star shroud (28) as a professional in Valorant ended so hard
2022 seems to be the year of tarik
This is how 2022 works for tarik: After ending his pro career in CS:GO, tarik switched to tactical shooter Valorant and exploded with it on Twitch. Together with his current colleague shroud he is one of the biggest streamers of the riot shooter.
For comparison, it streams less than half as much as xQc, the biggest streamer on Twitch, but can generate a similar increase in followers. Also compared to shroud, he’s on the air a little less, has only a fraction of the followers, but gets almost as many viewers on average (via sullygnome).
This is why tarik is “the new shroud”: Some parallels are obvious. Like tarik, shroud used to be a CS:GO professional, then became a full-time streamer on Twitch and was incredibly successful there – shroud now has over 10 million followers on the streaming platform.
But the two have another thing in common: As former shooter professionals, they look almost unbeatable compared to normal Twitch streamers. Shroud therefore made a name for himself as a “human aimbot”.
A possible professional career in Valorant was already being discussed on reddit in 2021, when tarik’s CS:GO career was just ending. He is simply “too good to be a content creator”. Tarik holds the highest rank in Valorant, Radiant, and is a regular on the leaderboards.
Now tarik has also been signed by shroud’s Team Sentinels, as the organization announced via Twitter on August 30th. However, tarik should not appear as an active player, but join the “Content Creator” team.
tarik confirmed that in one of his streams, but also said he’s available for the professional Valorant roster should he be called upon to do so. First of all, however, he should represent the organization in his streams. For example with the “Valorant Champions” starting today, August 31st.
Tarik says that he will continue to be himself and will not treat the team with kid gloves either: “I will critically evaluate what I see and how they perform.” That should make the team “some fire” and push them even further (via youtube).
That’s why Sentinels is the right choice for tarik: Before his time in Valorant, tarik was better known as the “shirtless CS:GO streamer” (via reddit). This “memeness” would be shared by Sentinels. In addition, one is very direct there, which suits him.
Sentinels wants to dominate Valorant with Tarik’s support
That’s why Sentinels is currently on a shopping spree: In 2022, Sentinels has already bought 2 of the biggest Valorant streamers and there seems to be a strategy behind it. Even shroud couldn’t save the rather meager season and Sentinels missed the playoff entry, but they have big plans.
As Sentinels CEO Rob Moore told American site Dot Esports, the organization is “striving to dominate Valorant the way TSM and G2 did for League.” They now appear to be one step closer to this goal.
From August 31 to September 18, the second edition of the “Valorant Champions” tournament will take place in Istanbul. Even though Sentinels won’t play, the team is somehow represented by tarik. He will broadcast and comment on the tournament live on site.
While tarik really took off on Twitch in 2022, German streamers are struggling to maintain the successes of the lockdown times.
