Football party in Germany.
At the same time, Sweden suffers a setback.
Blue and yellow has not been worse – in seven years.
Europe’s best countries are currently making up in Germany and it’s a party in both the streets and arenas. Countries such as Albania, Georgia and Slovenia are in the championship – but not Sweden. Blågult failed to qualify for the EC after a major fiasco in the qualifiers.

Janne Andersson failed to take Sweden to a major championship for the second time in a row, having also missed out on the World Cup in Qatar 2022. Despite Sweden having stars like Alexander Isak, Dejan Kulusevski and Viktor Gyökeres, the good results have not been forthcoming, and in addition to the championship misses there has also been a fiasco in the Nations League, where Sweden will henceforth play in the C-division.
And now comes the receipt for Sweden’s wretched form. On Thursday, Fifa released its world ranking for the national teams on the men’s side, and while Argentina remains in first place after winning the 2022 World Cup, Sweden drops significantly in the ranking. After two missed championships and the Nations League debacle, Sweden drops one place in the rankings, to 28th.
Worst in seven (!) years
This means that Sweden is behind nations such as South Korea and Australia, which are not traditionally known for their football playing. The position also happens to be Sweden’s worst on the official ranking list since 2017, seven years ago, when it was in 34th place.
Now there are hopes that Jon Dahl Tomasson, Sweden’s new national team captain, will once again lift Blue Yellow both in terms of results and on the ranking list. But the Dane has not had the best start to his new coaching assignment. Sweden have lost three of four since he took over as confederation captain, but he is still waiting to lead Sweden in a competitive match.
