Don’t know what to watch tonight? How about diving back into a classic of the American small screen? This week, a series celebrated its 20th anniversary. While it may seem like a classic teen series and may have been underestimated as such, it nevertheless addressed very current and modern themes, proving to be way ahead of its time. It’s a gem to revisit in streaming.
On September 22, Veronica Mars celebrated its 20th anniversary. This teen detective series has become a cult classic for its core fan base, and rightly so: created by Rob Thomas, it tells the story of a particularly intelligent and courageous but ostracized high school girl who works as a private investigator for her classmates. With, in the first season, a clear objective: to find out who killed her best friend, and why. However, her own father, a former sheriff turned private investigator, failed to solve the case.
Consisting of four seasons and a film (the feature film and the fourth season were released several years after the series’ cancellation in 2007), Veronica Mars also has a five-star cast and has revealed many talents who are now essential to television and cinema. Leading the way is Kristen Bell in the title role, who has since starred in The Good Place or did the voice of Anna in the original version of Frozen. The other main roles are played by Jason Dohring, Teddy Dunn, Enrico Colantoni or Percy Daggs III. Numerous cameos also appear throughout the series.
Broadcast since 2004, Veronica Mars is entertaining thanks to its many investigations, but it is much more than a classic “teen drama”. Many current themes are addressed with finesse, such as the question of consent, sexist and sexual violence, the place of women in society, class inequalities but also the question of psychological and emotional trauma or the single-parent family with a single father.
