Without James Gunn, superhero cinema would be much poorer. In both the indie and blockbuster sectors, he has proven that he understands the world of comic book heroes like few other filmmakers. Whether cinema or television: Gunn tells unconventional as well as sensitive Stories that burn into your memory.

From Super – Shut up, Crime! to Guardians of the Galaxy: He is now firmly entrenched as one of two decision makers at the helm of DC. Together with producer Peter Safran he should be in the coming years create new DC Universe. He delivered his move with The Suicide Squad.

Now on Amazon Prime, The Suicide Squad is a hugely entertaining DC blockbuster

The 2021 sequel follows one of the biggest DC debacles ever, the David Ayer-directed Suicide Squad. Gunn salvaged the best elements from its predecessor – most notably Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn – and one hilarious superhero film shot, which is very brutal to the point.

Black humor and nasty bits of violence are the order of the day in The Suicide Squad. Gunn takes no prisoners and sets our expectations right at the beginning as he sacrifices one notable DC character after another, as if he has a quota to meet before he can move on to the next mission.

The Suicide Squad convinces with its hardness. But Gunn isn’t just a cynical director. Just as often as he pushes the anti-heroes into the abyss, he offers them his hand in order to pull them out again. A few make it, a few don’t. And some get their second chance in the spin-off: Peacemaker.
