With films like Blue Velvet, Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive, David Lynch has created unforgettable masterpieces of surrealist cinema. The director also directed a film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel Dune early in his career.

The production was so disastrous for Lynch that he decided to until today does not want to comment on the subject. The master director has now emphasized this again in a recent interview.

An interview with David Lynch is printed in the French cinema magazine Cahiers du Cinéma, in which he is asked for his opinion on Denis Villeneuve’s version of Dune. The answer is clear:

After Eraserhead and The Elephant Man, Lynch shot his first major studio blockbuster in the early 80s with Dune. To date, it should remain his only film of this kind. The studio took control of the editing, leaving little of Lynch’s original vision in the final theatrical release.

Since this devastating experience, Lynch has refused to speak publicly about Dune. As the current interview by Cahiers du Cinéma shows, the mere mention of the sci-fi brand triggers strong disgust from the cult director.
