One of the most devastating dystopias is drawn in Children of Men by Alfonso Cuarón. In the sci-fi masterpiece no children will be born in the futurewhich means the slow demise of mankind.
In our list of the best science fiction films since 2000, the film made it to number 1. At that time, the strip was also nominated for three Oscars, but in the end Children of Men got nothing. The film will be shown on Tele 5 on Tuesday evening.
Children of Men fascinates with unbelievable staging
For his film, Cuarón puts us in the perspective of the main character Theo (Clive Owen) for the entire duration. He is given the task of bringing the last pregnant woman on the planet to safety. With the help of imagery genius Emmanuel Lubezki’s incredible camera, we get up close and personal with how devastating and menacing the dystopian world of Children of Men feels like.
The cameraman creates this intense effect primarily through a large number of plan sequences lined up one after the other, which give the impression that Cuarón’s sci-fi overfilm would be mostly shot without cuts been.
Children of Men failed to win an Oscar
At the 2007 Academy Awards, Cuarón’s work was nominated in three categories. For the best camera, the best editing and the best adapted screenplay. In the end, Children of Men got nothing in all three categories. The status of an absolute sci-fi masterpiece is hardly scratched by this award dampener.
Children of Men is running September 5, 2023 at 8:15 p.m. on Tele 5. If you don’t have time, you can stream the cracker with a Netflix subscription, for example.
