Frank Herbert’s novel The Desert Planet is an acclaimed sci-fi classic. For a long time it was considered unfilmable. Legendary director David Lynch burned his fingers in a controversial attempt in 1984. It was not until 2021 that Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners) brought a masterpiece to the cinema with Dune, which takes the great book template into account. He balances in powerful images bombastic, disturbing, but beautiful universe full of spaceships and monsters on the screen. Amazon Prime Video now has the film in its streaming range.
On Amazon Prime: Dunes hauntingly beautiful sci-fi images will haunt you for a long time
Dune revolves around the desert planet Arrakis, whose Spice resource is the only one that allows interplanetary travel. For years, the brutal Harkonnen have enriched themselves, now the noble house Atreides should take over the patronage. Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) travels to his new home with his young son Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and his mother Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson). And is cruelly betrayed.
Thanks to cinematographer Greig Fraser (Zero Dark Thirty), Villeneuve pours the almost operatic story into incredible images. When war turns the desert into a sea of flames, the sinister Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) bathes in black liquid or the elite warriors of the Sardaukar celebrate a bizarre anointing ritual before the battle, the film unfolds its full effect. He lives from these images, which are intoxicating and overwhelming at the same time.
