The mysterious Nirmata is said to be one AI super weapon have created that could wipe out humanity forever. The ex-soldier Joshua (John David Washington) is given the task of finding it before it is used. As it turns out, the supposed superweapon is a human robot child.
Building on this premise, Edwards stages one thrilling odyssey, which finds itself between the war scenes of Apocalypse Now and the emotional science fiction cinema of Steven Spielberg. ET in particular served as the inspiration for Edwards’ visually stunning sci-fi vision.
Despite all the obvious sci-fi elements, the film feels frighteningly real. Edwards anchors the breathtaking panoramas in our world. Everything in The Creator is tangible. That’s one of the great charms of this dystopian journey that takes us into space and culminates in an action-packed finale.
Best sci-fi film of 2023: After a cinema flop, The Creator gets a second chance at Disney+
Although the film, with its budget of 80 million US dollars, was significantly cheaper than many other sci-fi blockbusters that now cost 150 to 250 million, it flopped. The Creator only comes up with one Box office gross of $104 million, as Box Office Mojo’s numbers show. That’s far too little to be successful.
Don’t let the flop scare you away. It’s absolutely amazing what Edwards has created on such a relatively small budget. The Creator doesn’t have to hide from high-budget Hollywood films for a second. On the contrary: many expensive screen spectacles can learn some things from Edwards’ film.
