The best new game of the Summer Game Fest has to compete against Dragon Ball and Street Fighter, but it can

At the Summer Game Fest 2024 there was once again a barrage of trailers. Some of them could easily have been overlooked. But one game stuck in MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus’s memory, even though it was shown between two absolute highlights: Tears of Metal. The game looks like exactly what he – and all of you – would like.

“WTF, is Asterix a good game?” That was the reaction of my colleague Sophia Weiss to the trailer for Tears of Metal. At the time, I was sitting in the ticker to properly formulate all the information about the Summer Game Fest, and my immediate thought was: “I have no idea what that is, but I have to have it.”

Tears of Metal absolutely convinced me with its trailer. After Batman: Arkham Shadow was a huge disappointment, this indie game pulled all the strings for me:

The game is not a graphical highlight, but the focus is entirely on the combat and troop aspect anyway. The trailer shows bloody battles, soldier and city management and is accompanied by pure metal.

What makes Tears of Metal even better is that it’s all co-op! So I don’t have to march against the enemies as a single Highlander, but have friends behind me. Wonderful!

Tears of Metal has the 2 things a good game needs: looting and leveling

The Steam page for Tears of Metal is now online and shows a few more details about the game. These include details about the actual gameplay. At its core, it is a roguelite, which means: you keep playing in new rounds, fighting as long as you can and then have a meta-progression with improvements for the next run.

According to the information available so far, it goes something like this:

  • We play one of several unique heroes and can learn skills.
  • Soldiers are recruited as companions and can gain new skills if they live long enough. But if they die, they are gone permanently (permadeath).
  • Upgrades and “over a hundred artifacts” make for unique builds – that at least sounds like loot.
  • Between campaigns, settlements can be expanded to construct new buildings and gain access to new content.
  • Unlockables include new heroes, upgrades, cosmetics, and more. The only really important detail that’s still missing is the release. The planned release date will come in an “upcoming announcement.”

    Squeezed between 2 highlights

    Tears of Metal was easy to overlook – or more accurately: forget. The location could hardly have been worse for such a great game:

  • Right before that came Street Fighter, which absolutely rocked the hall, as editor-in-chief Leya Jankwoski tells us.
  • Directly after that came Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero, which caused cheers just with the face of Son Goku.
  • The trailer came out of nowhere, with no announcement from Geoff Keighley, no information about the game. Just the raw gameplay with the reference “Wishlist now”. Accordingly, there is little information about the game, but I know one thing: I’m waiting for it to come out and I’m going to play it!

    The new roguelite was framed by two of the highlights of the evening, which were only surpassed shortly afterwards by Dune – the game that was the highlight of the evening for me personally, even though a lot of it is already known.
