Spider-Man 2 is a sequel that looks pretty unspectacular compared to current Marvel films: There are no big twists and revelations. No time travel, no cameos and certainly no multiverse. But that’s the strength of the film: Raimi develops the events from the first part with clever observations.

The heart of Spider-Man 2 are Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire), Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) and Harry Osborn (James Franco). This is joined by Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), one of the Most Memorable Marvel Villains at all. Each character gets a compelling arc, not just a string of teasers.
Raimi does not play for time and prepares other projects. His attention is focused on the further development of the story. Especially in the melodramatic aspects he leans. That doesn’t mean the action is lacking in any way. On the contrary: the fight between Spidey and Doc Ock in the urban canyons of New York alone is an undeniable triumph of modern blockbuster cinema.
