The best items in Diablo 4 now cost 10 million gold, but players say it’s better this way

Shortly before the release of Season 4, Blizzard released a video about the new itemization in Diablo 4 and the endgame. There the developers explain the new crafting systems again and show how many materials you really have to grind.

This is the change:

Here you can find all information about Season 4.

How much does crafting cost? In the latest video, the developers briefly show the steps of masterworking. However, only 4 of the 12 steps can be seen. Higher costs can be seen at every step. At level 12 you previously needed:

  • 30 Neathiron
  • 2 legendary crafting materials
  • 12 Veiled Crystals
  • 1 Forgotten Soul
  • 525,000 gold
  • The new costs are:

  • 250 Neathiron
  • 20 legendary crafting materials
  • 50 Veiled Crystals
  • 10 Forgotten Souls
  • 10 million gold
  • So the costs are almost twentyfold. It looks similar for other steps. You can find the list in detail from our colleagues at wowhead. Please note that these are preliminary figures and may change before the release.

10 million gold sounds enormous, but previously you only had a 20% chance that the crafting would work at all. Now every step works 100%. The players say: This is much better.

By the way, you can get Neathiron and other materials from the Pit, the new endgame dungeon. You can read more about this in our big interview about Season 4 with Timothy Ismay and Deric Nuñez. The developers explain the changes in the video:

“Better to have higher costs than unfortunate failures”

Although the costs are now significantly higher and seem extremely expensive, the change doesn’t really seem to bother anyone. The community says so far that they would rather pay more materials but no longer have to waste materials due to failure (via Reddit).

Casuals could still complain, but that would be their problem – the system is now good as it is. In any case, you should think carefully about what you actually want to accomplish:

I think a lot of people who complain about the cost miss the fact that you really should just be finishing gear that’s already perfect to give it the finishing touches. If you complete everything you wear only to find a better item, you’re doing it wrong. This is an endgame system.

The developers explain in an interview what exactly the new loop will look like:

  • A basic item will only have 2-3 values.
  • You then add further values via hardening. A random value is chosen from a list. You can find the recipes all over the world.
  • The hardening level determines how often you can inflict or re-roll affixes, similar to crafting in Last Epoch.
  • You can then complete fully hardened items.
  • Completion improves the value of all affixes, and at levels 4, 8 and 12 an affix is further strengthened.
  • If you don’t like the result, you can reset the item to level 12 and start again.
  • The best items you can improve are those that already have 3 strong “major affixes”. Major affixes are 1.5 times as powerful as normal affixes and can only appear on bequeathed items. The developers name two sources: Drops and the Obolus dealer, who will become significantly more important again next season: A dealer will be much more important in Diablo 4 Season 4 – you should hoard his currency while leveling up
