The “best” items have become useless, everything else is better

Season 4 brought a new crafting system to Diablo 4 and with it completely new ways to improve items. Some players now believe that this makes them even better than unique items.

Since the start of Season 4, there have been new crafting systems in Diablo 4: Tempering and Masterworking. Hardening allows you to add two additional affixes to an item. That’s enough for some players to discard their uniques for it.

Why are uniques “useless”? Unique items drop with special affixes and aspects that are not available on other items, but they cannot be “hardened” and given other useful affixes.

On Reddit, players write that Uniques can be fun, but are too big a compromise. Others think: At least you can sell them for good gold, because many people lack that in Season 4. MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus is also poor as a church mouse.

“One should allow uniques for ‘hardening’”

What exactly do players say about the items? On Reddit, “Numerous_Money4276” wrote on May 21 that Uniques now seem to be “really weak.” While they add interesting mechanics, they cannot be used because the trade-off is simply too great.

And “Loadingexperience” notes on Reddit that they bring in around 200,000 from the dealer, which helps with gold farming. Blizzard released a patch to address the “gold problem”, but it only solved a small issue.

In another Reddit post, “OwnAcanthocephala438” writes that uniques should be allowed for “hardening”. He goes on to write that given the strength of the tempered affixes, it’s “really difficult to justify using uniques.” Adding tempered affixes would encourage more uniques to be incorporated into more builds. On the other hand, “elgosu” believes that “hardening” would make them “less unique”.

“They basically rendered Uniques useless this season.”

What do Diablo experts say? Diablo partner “Chronikz”, who is behind maxroll.gg’s minion builds for necromancers, also said in the live stream on Twitch on May 18th that uniques are “bad” in Season 4 because you can’t harden them. And the hardening is “incredibly strong.” (Source: Twitch, Timestamp: 02:43:45).

Essentially, uniques were rendered “useless” during the season. Only Uber Uniques are still strong. Chronikz also notes that there are definitely uniques without which some builds don’t work, such as “Storm Roar” for druid builds. He advises selling uniques, but keeping a good version in case a “broken build” comes along that you want to play.

What do you think about Uniques in Season 4 of Diablo 4? Do you continue to use them because they have pretty good affixes and aspects, or do you stick with your “hardened” legendarys? When it comes to the new crafting system, you should follow a specific order when using the features. These are actually great, but if you upgrade items in the wrong order, you’re pretty much literally throwing away gold – and probably powerful items too.
