The best free TV premiere at Easter is completely buried

Every year at Easter, the local broadcasters put on an impressive TV program. From multi-million dollar blockbusters to secret film gems, everything is included. This is likely to be a particular attraction for film fans many first broadcasts be. The annoying thing this year is that the best free TV premiere is being missed in the middle of the night.

We’re talking about Nomadland, which came to cinemas in 2020 and tonight for the first time on television is broadcast. We’ve been waiting four years for the free TV premiere of Chloé Zhao’s sensitive road movie. Now ZDF is only showing the film in its nighttime program. We would still like to make a recommendation.

One of the best films of recent years: Nomadland takes Francis McDormand through the USA

Nomadland is one of those films that seems very inconspicuous at first glance. At the center of the story is Fern, played by Frances McDormand (Fargo). Since the death of her husband and the collapse of the local economy she lives without a permanent home. The only home she has is her rusty van.

Fern is a modern nomad. She moves from job to job. Sometimes she works in the halls of a huge mail order company like Amazon, sometimes she cleans the toilets in the parking lots of tourist attractions. Zhao, who already has one with The Rider strong character study staged, follows her protagonist attentively at every step.

The film was inspired by the non-fiction book Nomads of Work: Surviving the United States in the 21st Century, which was published in 2017 by author Jessica Bruder. Zhao wants to get as close to Brother’s descriptions as possible and therefore filmed with many people who actually lead a nomadic life.

The answer to Into the Wild: Nomadland is a thoughtful, touching and very poetic film

McDormand is the only professional actress in the cast. The rest is made up of amateur actors own stories and experiences be incorporated into the film. An exciting balancing act in which the boundaries between staged feature films and documentary observation blur.

Francis McDormand in Nomadland

Nomadland not only has a very touching naturalness. Through the careful approaches to Fern and the people she meets on her journey, the film discovers one simple, thoughtful beautywhich is completely underwhelming and feels like a late response to the youthful storm of Into the Wild.

Ultimately, as with The Rider and the later Marvel blockbuster Eternals, Zhao proves to be a poetic filmmaker who lets images and moments work for themselves. Sometimes we just follow McDormand as she moves across the vastness of the USA while the sky shines in the most incredible colors.
