The best Finnish result in a decade: Viljamaat fifth in the World Youth Championship | Sports in a nutshell

Konsta and Veeti Viljamaa finished fifth in the under-19 World Championships.

Const and Veeti Viljamaa were fifth in the Beach Volleyball Youth World Championships. They lost to a Polish pair in the quarterfinals of the Under-19 World Championships Szymon Pietraszek and Jakub Krzeminski with points 19–21, 18–21 The World Championships were held in Shanghai, China.

The last time a Finnish pair ranked better was in 2014, when both Taru Lahti and Anniina Parkkinen were fourth in the under-23 World Championships and Sentry Siren and Miro Määttanen in the under-19 World Championships. In total, the ranking in the top eight was the fifth in the Finnish history of the sport at the youth WC level.

– After a great tournament, the top conditions China has offered us. We played above our own level, but in the last game we couldn’t get our own relaxed game going, so it was a disappointingly tight loss to Poland, Veeti Viljamaa stated in the press release.

Veeti Viljamaa is only 17 years old and Konsta is 16 years old. The pair of brothers won all four of their matches before the quarterfinals.
