The best fantasy adventure of the year so far could, contrary to expectations, get a sequel, but only under a really tough condition

The best fantasy adventure of the year so far could

That Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves could be something very special was foreseeable even before the theatrical release. The fantasy film starring Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez made that promise as fun adventure with original action ideas and a brilliant cast true. However, this was not reflected in the box office.

Squashed between the launches of John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the D&D film didn’t have an opportunity to build a larger audience through word of mouth. The disappointing box office result therefore speaks against a sequel. Recently, the head of Paramount personally named the one condition under which we could see Chris Pine and company in those roles again.

Dungeons & Dragons 2 isn’t without a chance, but it’s going to be tough

Studio CEO Brian Robbins answered Variety’s questions. As part of a large portrait, he brought up the possibility of Dungeons & Dragons 2. His answer:

we need to find out how we can produce the film for less money.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

According to the industry publication, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has not turned a profit, but will make a loss. How big it is remains a matter of speculation. The budget is estimated at $150 million. In order to get into the black, the fantasy film would probably have had to break the 370 million mark in box office, since advertising and other costs have to be taken into account in addition to the budget. D&D only grossed $208 million.

Sequels with lower budgets than their predecessors are not uncommon. With films like Paddington 2, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Logan – The Wolverine, the calculation worked. Whether Dungeons & Dragons will make it that far remains unclear.
