Admittedly, Arnold Schwarzenegger is no longer a guarantee for good action films. While he seemed invincible in the 1980s and 1990s, he finally had to some defeats on the big screen. Particularly bitter: The return to his star role as a Terminator turned out to be a creative declaration of bankruptcy twice.
Between all the disappointments, there is also a really good action film that Schwarzenegger has made over the past 20 years. We’re talking about The Last Stand. Tonight you can watch Kim Jee-woon’s adrenaline-charged Western variation on Kabel Eins’ evening television program.
The Last Stand: Arnold Schwarzenegger competes as the sheriff of a small town against a gang boss
In The Last Stand, Schwarzenegger plays Sheriff Ray Owen. He was a big deal in Los Angeles. After an operation that went completely wrong, he retreats to the countryside. In the small town of Sommerton just before the border with Mexico from now on he ensures that the law is obeyed.

As sleepy as Sommerton seems at first glance, the small town soon turns into a theater of war. A notorious drug lord is on his way to the peaceful town in a heavily armed vehicle to cross the border into Mexico. Even the FBI is on his trail.
The Last Stand marks Schwarzenegger’s first film role after serving as governor of California from 2003 to 2011. The comeback wasn’t a big success at the box office. Kim Jee-woon, who previously caused a stir with films like I Saw the Devil and The Good, the Bad, the Weird, still delivers strong action.
Many stylish moments are combined with familiar western elements, while Schwarzenegger appears in the middle of the crazy goings-on as an aging sheriff Basis for many of his later heroes creates. But we are far from a tired action festival. The Last Stand doesn’t shy away from any escalation, no matter how exaggerated or tasteless. An unleashed film that doesn’t slow down.
