The battle royale that wanted to be like Fortnite with magic is dead

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

The Battle Royale Spellbreak is now disabled. Twitch streamer IXITimmyIXI rounded up players to say goodbye to the game in a final round.

Spellbreak is a magical battle royale with gameplay reminiscent of Fortnite with spells. Players do not shoot at each other, but cast different magic. You can play on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch or PC.

In September 2020 Spellbreak went online, now it’s dead and being shut down – so it didn’t even survive 3 years. In the summer of 2022, the developers Proletariat announced that the game would go offline in early 2023.

Why is it turned off? Spellbreak “failed to break through and reach a sustainable state,” CEO Seth Sivak wrote on reddit at the time. It is also known that Blizzard bought the studio (via VentureBeat), which is another reason for the shutdown of Spellbreak.

If you look at the number of players (via SteamDB), it becomes clear that Spellbreak has hardly been played on Steam since June 2021. It averaged about 500 players, then 300, and finally just under 100. Of course, the other platforms come into play, but the numbers there are probably not higher. The reviews on Steam have been very positive until recently.

A solemn farewell to Spellbreak

But although the number of players was in the basement, the Battle Royale had loyal fans like the streamer IXITimmyIXI. He gathered a few of his subscribers, friends and Twitch colleagues to play one last round and say goodbye to Spellbreak.

They accompany Spellbreak to the end, stand in a heap and wave from a thunderstorm of magic spells. Then, one by one, they are swallowed up by the Spellstorm.

Fans want to open a community server

Although the official Spellbreak servers are now over, the fanbase remains. In his stream, IXItimmyIXI talks about starting a community server to get the Battle Royale.

He calls for joining the community discord and asks for fans who might be able to help with the development. This should all happen on a legal level, according to the streamer.

Something similar happened with other games that were shut down: players didn’t want to give up and founded their own servers. The Warhammer MMORPG recently received a major update, although it officially no longer exists.
