The agreed ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is now in its last day. Both sides said on Sunday that they are willing to extend the temporary ceasefire under certain conditions.
The pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas began on Friday, and since then dozens of hostages held by Hamas have been freed and more than 100 Palestinian prisoners have been released from Israeli custody.
As the agreed ceasefire is now coming to an end, focus is being directed in several directions on how the temporary truce can be extended.
– It is my goal, it is our goal, to have this pause continue after tomorrow so that we can see more of the hostages come out and so that we can get more humanitarian aid to those in need in Gaza, the US said :’s President Joe Biden on Sunday.
He also said he wants the fighting to be put on hold “as long as prisoners keep coming out”.
– I got the impression that all parties in the region are looking for a way to end this so that all the hostages are released and Hamas no longer has control over Gaza, Biden said.
Hamas has signaled its willingness to extend the ceasefire. A source close to Hamas told AFP that Hamas had told mediators it was open to extending the pause by “two to four days”.
During that time, Hamas believes it should be possible to get another 20 to 40 Palestinian prisoners released, according to the source.
According to the agreement on the cease-fire that is now underway, 50 people held hostage by terrorist-branded Hamas are to be released for four days in exchange for 150 Palestinian prisoners. Also included in the agreement is that the ceasefire can be extended to release more hostages, another ten each day.
