The Korisliga match between Uusikaupunki’s Korihai and Tampere’s Pyrinnö was played on December 30, but the winner of the match is not clear even after three weeks. The match was initially marked as an 84–81 victory for Korihaiten.
Salon Seudun Sanomat (you switch to another service) however, it was reported shortly after that both teams scored 83 points in the game, meaning the game should have gone to overtime. The competition director of the Basketball Association, who watched the match on the spot Tom Westerholm admitted For Ilta-Sanom (you switch to another service)that the association found several mistakes that affected the match situation.
The minutes, the scoreboard and the statistics had different readings.
The rules and disciplinary unit of the Basketball Association handled the events of the match. The Basketball Association announced on January 7 that the result of the match will remain in effect. Korihai was fined 2,000 euros for the events. In addition, four match officials were banned for one match.
Pyrintö filed an appeal against the decision and the matter was discussed at the board meeting of the Basketball Association on Thursday.
– Pyrinnö has considered that the decision of the rules and disciplinary unit has been incorrect, because the final result of the match has been left in effect as it is, Pyrinnö’s lawyer in Tampere Jouko Juntunen said before Thursday’s federal government meeting.
The match will be played again
The Basketball Association announced on Friday that the match between Korihai and Pyrinnö will be played again on Tuesday, January 24. According to the Finnish Basketball Association’s press release, several errors in the minutes and the scoreboard that affected the final result were found in the recording afterwards.
What makes the situation interesting is that the Korisliiga regular season should have ended on Saturday, but now it ends three days later.
Korihai, on the other hand, has the opportunity to take the matter to the Sports Legal Protection Board.
– We will discuss the matter a bit more, executive director of Korihaiden Casper Santanen comment Western Finland (you will switch to another service).
The next series of the Korisliiga starts on Wednesday. The six best teams of the regular season play in the upper extension series and the six weakest in the lower extension series. The top two in the lower secondary series also advance to the playoffs, quarterfinals, in the spring.
Pyrinnö still has the chance to advance to the upper secondary league in its remaining two regular season matches.
The rules and disciplinary unit of the basketball association stated earlier that neither team filed an objection to the result.
– The competition rules state that the objection must be made during the game. Pyrintön has not acted during the game or immediately after in the manner required by the objection, says Juntunen.
According to Juntunen, Pyrintö believes that this was not possible.
– Purinno’s head coach Miikka Sopanen has asked many times during the game if the minutes of the match are correct. He has received an affirmative answer from the referee. In that situation, Pyrinno has had no reason to object. The referee has also signed the protocol.
– Pyrinno has not had the opportunity to proceed in accordance with the competition rules for submitting an objection, Juntunen adds.
Juntunen says that without the mistakes of the officials, Pyrintö would have won the game in principle if the points had been counted correctly.
– According to the effort, it is unreasonable and against the spirit of sportsmanship that the mistakes of Korihai’s officials lead to the fact that the final result does not correspond to the baskets made in the matches.
Kouvot wonders
The most recent decision of the federal government caused irritation in Kouvola’s Kouvoi. The background of the eruption is the match between Kouvoi and BC Nokia that was canceled on December 12.
Kouvot failed to get enough players for the match due to poor health, which is why the competition division of the Basketball Association ordered Kouvot a 0-40 loss. According to the basketball association, the teams could not find a replacement time for the match.
– We are living in interesting times, we were not given the opportunity to play again after the regular season. We will demand the Kouvot–BC Nokia match to be played next week, Kouvot tweeted on Friday.
Kouvoi’s situation is indeed interesting, because the team is seventh in the league and it still has a chance for a higher promotion.
