Northern Sweden was hit by strong wind gusts during the night towards Saturday.
Frida Dahlgren, outside Örnsköldsvik, had her balcony roof ripped apart by the wind.
– We heard a loud bang, then the roof had blown off and landed on the car, she says.
During Friday, SMHI issued orange weather warnings about strong wind and storm gusts over parts of northern Sweden. About ten thousand households lost power during the night to Saturday, including in Västernorrland and Jämtland, TT reports.
Frida Dahlgren lives in Överön, outside Örnsköldsvik. During Friday evening, her balcony roof blew off and landed on the family’s car, which P4 Extra previously reported on.
– It was very stormy. About half an hour before, the children and I had been out for a walk and then it was basically windless. We just got in and had time to put on our pajamas and then we heard it rustling outside. It was so bad that the neighbors also went out, she says.
Flagpole and greenhouse were destroyed
The bang that was heard was the balcony roof blowing off and landing on the car.
– My first thought was that we should try to remove it so that it doesn’t fly away and hurt someone, she says.
Frida Dahlgren enlisted the help of her neighbors, and together they divided the roof into smaller parts which they lifted away to a barn.
Several neighbors in the area were also affected by the strong winds. Among other things, a flagpole blew over and a greenhouse was destroyed in the storm.
– It’s unlucky, but it was lucky that no one was hurt, and that the car did as well as it did. We have found two stone marks on the windshield and there are a few scratches on the hood, but otherwise the car has managed, she says.
Fallen trees still a problem
On Saturday afternoon, SMHI only has one orange warning left. It applies to wind in combination with snowfall in the Northern Lapland mountains.
However, fallen trees over roads still cause some problems in traffic, says Bengt Olsson, press manager at the Swedish Transport Administration.
– There have been a lot of trees on the roads, especially on the smaller road network. We’ve pretty much been at it since early morning and working all day, and it’s not over yet, he says, advising travelers who hit the roads to be observant.
– You have to be prepared that it can get noisy and messy.
Above all, Jämtland was affected by the storm during the night.
– But it has started to move towards Västernorrland, Västerbotten and Norrbotten, says Bengt Olsson.
