The COP29 meeting seeks more climate finance for developing countries.
The UN COP29 climate meeting, which started today in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, has stumbled into a dispute between the countries right from the start, a meeting source tells news agency AFP.
E3G’s think tank by Alden Meyer according to the meeting’s first dispute broke out already from its agenda. The actual negotiations cannot begin until the agenda has been approved at the beginning of the meeting.
At the start of the meeting, the Secretary General of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Simon Stiell appealed in his speech for international cooperation.
– Now is the time to show that global cooperation has not been discouraged, Stiell said.
Stiell also pointed out that climate finance should not be thought of as charity.
– The ambitious new climate finance target is fully in the self-interest of every nation, including the largest and wealthiest, Stiell said.
At the COP29 meeting, the EU aims for a wider group of financiers for climate finance, which will be distributed to the climate actions of developing countries.
