the avenues of the preliminary draft law on the end

The preliminary draft law on the end of life, which must be presented in February 2024, was unveiled by Le Figaro, Thursday December 14. This text is a “provisional version” of the bill for the new French end-of-life model sent to Emmanuel Macron. It opens the door to assisted suicide and euthanasia.

The 35-page document, consulted by Le Figaro, is divided into three parts: supportive care, patients’ rights and assistance in dying. This last part is certainly the most sensitive. She is talking about assisted dying which consists of the administration of a lethal substance which could be carried out by the person themselves, or by a caregiver if they cannot.

It remains to be clearly defined who will be affected, for what diseases and what the life prognosis range will be. Jonathan Denis, president of the Association for the Right to Die with Dignity, finds that there are very good points in this text. But for him, the priority now is to apply it urgently:

The question is about impatience. Parliamentarians are tired of waiting for this text, the French are tired of waiting for this text and patients are tired of waiting and having to flee abroad or be accompanied illegally in France, while this This is something that should have happened a long time ago. We absolutely must move forward. »

The text is now on Emmanuel Macron’s desk and should be presented in February, if the schedule is maintained.
