In the US, the candy has been around for a long time, but received a new boost with the trend in social media.
In Chinese social media, there are not only videos of people eating the harmful candy, but also recipes and tutorials on how to make the popular candy yourself at home.

The candy may contain lead and mercury
The candy can be made of industrial wax.
The trendy candy should have a beeswax shell and a sweet, soft filling. The type of candy is called “wax candy” in social media.
But the risk now exists that the beeswax candy shell is instead made of industrial wax.
Industrial wax is used, among other things, in the surface treatment of floors and cars and can contain both heavy metals such as lead and mercury.
– Heavy metals are not at all good to ingest. If you take it in high concentrations for a long time, you can have negative health effects, says Joakim Meuller Bäckman at the Swedish Food Agency to SVT News.

The dangerous candy can be ordered to Sweden
In many cases, the packages you can order home from the internet lack both a list of contents and a clear manufacturer.
According to SVT Nyheter, the company Partykungen is to distribute a brand of wax candy similar to those that Chinese authorities warn about.
What kind of wax is used in that candy is not clear from the list of ingredients.

Meuller Bäckman believes that it is not unusual for sweets and other foodstuffs that do not meet the EU’s requirements to be sold to Sweden from other countries.
– When we monitor the world around us and look at what is available online, we see that there is quite a lot out there that we in Sweden and the EU see as unsafe. And therefore should not be sold, he says SVT News.
He also advises people not to buy candy online if it is not clear who is behind the sale.
