Xavier Yvon: The scene that I am going to describe to you takes place at the beginning of 2025, a few months after the second inauguration of American President Joe Biden. The Democrat has once again triumphed over Donald Trump. He is 82 years old and the oldest president the United States has ever had.
Joe Biden gives a talk in West Virginia. As he walks slowly towards his desk, the president stumbles and falls to the ground. The cameras of the news channels capture the scene. This is not the first time this situation has happened. As with every fall, the President’s security service rushes to pick him up. Except that this time, the president does not get up.
The journalists are evacuated, Joe Biden is taken aside. Help arrives quickly but the situation is serious. A few minutes after this heart attack, the verdict of the doctors falls: the Democratic president will not recover.
Automatically, some powers from Joe Biden are transferred to Vice President Kamala Harris. A government meeting is urgently organized in Washington. It votes “the inability to govern” of the president and in the process, the former senator from California takes his place. She takes an oath on the Bible in a room of the White House. Kamala Harris then becomes the first female president of the United States.
This scene isn’t just an exercise in political fiction, it’s a realistic scenario that many Americans are obsessed with as the 2024 presidential election nears. president, but also of Kamala Harris’ ability to govern the country. Because more than any other vice president before her, Kamala Harris is “a heartbeat” from the Oval Office.
