The Swedish authorities are currently negotiating closely on cooperation to combat gang crime, which intensified during September.
The Swedish police have just commented on the ongoing wave of violence at their weekly press conference. Swedish police chief Anders Thornberg according to recently several limits have been crossed. He describes the situation as very serious, and states that most cases are connected to criminal gangs.
According to Thornberg, an intensive operation is underway to bring the escalated violence under control. According to him, the police prevent several cases every week that do not end up on the pages of newspapers. Drugs and weapons are confiscated and murders are prevented.
– Thanks to our quick action, we have prevented several serious crimes and arrested several people. There are currently 300 people in custody on suspicion of gang-related offences, more than ever before.
– The people behind the acts are being chased frantically. We will continue as long as necessary and we will never give up.
According to Thornberg, in the short term it is very difficult to predict that gang violence would end or decrease. However, the police have drawn up a plan with the help of which the violence that has gotten out of hand is to be eradicated. The report in question will be published on Monday.
– We will increase cooperation with several different authorities and organizations.
Young people even offer to kill themselves
According to Thornberg, it is very worrying that brutal violence is increasingly committed by underage children.
– The recruitment of young people into gangs must be stopped. There are young people who contact gangs on their own initiative so that they can kill.
– Young people must be offered a brighter future.
Cooperation with the defense forces
The Swedish government has said that the duty of confidentiality between the police, social services and schools is going to be removed. Prime minister of the country Ulf Kristersson said yesterday Thursday that in this way young people can be helped in time in the future, before they end up in gangs.
According to Thornberg, cooperation with the defense forces is also being discussed.
– We want more cooperation with the army. This applies to supervisory tasks and the utilization of various analysts and other expertise. However, the cooperation would take place under the leadership of the police, and the army is not being sent to the streets to perform police duties.
– This would not be a revolutionary turn. With so many cases, our resources are limited. All state resources should be utilized in the best possible way.
