Having a pet comes with a lot of responsibility, something that not all pet owners have understood. At least that means Roger PetterssonSecretary General of the animal rights organization World Animal Protection.

Earlier this summer reported News24 that more and more cats are euthanized despite being perfectly healthy, a number that gets even bigger during the holiday season.
– Stricter requirements should be placed on those who want to buy a pet, so that those who behave this heartlessly are screened out. They should not be able to own animals, Petterson told Nyheter24 at the time.

But what happens if the owner gets sick?
Joanna Lindecivil servant on standby at Region Skåne, says in a press release that she is one of those who are usually called if paramedics are picking up a sick person and discover that there is a pet in the home.
“It could be relatives or healthcare staff who call and say that there is a dog or cat left in the apartment when a person has left the home with an ambulance. Formally, the pets are not the responsibility of the healthcare service, but we do not leave an animal in need,” she writes in the message.
If there is no relative or neighbor who can take care of the pet, it looks different. Then the County Administrative Board’s animal protection unit intervenes instead.

If the authority decides to take care of the pet, it can be expensive for the owner, says Linde.
“It can be quite a lot of money depending on how long the care period is. The County Administrative Board also cannot have the animal stabled for any length of time, which in the worst case can lead to the animal needing to be relocated or euthanized, which is very sad,” writes Linde in the press release.
To avoid this, the house or mat must plan ahead.
“Now the County Administrative Board wants to alert animal owners that they need to prepare, by encouraging animal owners to create contact cards for their animals should they unexpectedly end up in hospital.”, writes Region Skåne on its website.

Paula Hultgrenhead of the pet unit at the County Administrative Board, also believes that the contact card can be an ordinary handwritten note.
If you know that you may have to stay in hospital for a longer period of time, it may be good to contact an animal boarding house beforehand, writes Region Skåne.
