The Android version of Gmail should be able to save

The Android version of Gmail should be able to save you valuable time by summarizing email exchanges thanks to a new function using Gemini, Google’s AI.

In the race to dominate the generative artificial intelligence market, Google is betting everything on its Gemini AI, which it intends to deploy across all of its services. As a reminder, its chatbot, which is based on Gemini Pro, one of the company’s most powerful large language models (LLM), is designed to help users in their daily lives, whether to write texts or plan events. , generate images, summarize documents, write emails or simply save time browsing. HAS Ultimately, Gemini should even replace Google Assistant. Also, the Mountain View firm is gradually extending its use to some of its services, such as Google Messages, where certain beta testers can now communicate directly with the AI (see our article), but also in Google Maps. The Mountain View firm would even consider offering premium functions, based on generative artificial intelligence, on Google Search, integrated into the Gemini Advanced paid subscription (see our article).

Gmail also has the right to its share of AI-powered functions, for the moment only in its test program. So, on the web version, Gemini can summarize a discussion thread, suggest replies, search for information in emails and Google Drive files. The firm is now tackling the mobile version of electronic messaging or, depending on AssembleDebug, it is reportedly preparing a new function to summarize emails, called “Summarize this email”. This is particularly useful for long emails with low information density.

Summarize this email: a button to use AI in Gmail

Spotted in version 2024.03.31.621006929 of the Android application, a “Summarize this email” button appears just below the email title, even if it is currently inactive. As specified on the Google support page, this function is currently only effective on the web version of its tools dedicated to professionals, and it only concerns email discussion threads which include more than two responses. The new “Summarize this email” button is, however, presented on the general public version of Gmail for Android.

Presumably a pop-up will appear at the bottom of the screen, with a bulleted summary of the email. The operation would be somewhat similar to the web, although the side panel would be replaced by the pop-up window. A “Gemini” entry was also spotted in the three-dot menu on the top bar. Again, this entry has no function and only displays a white sheet with the Gemini logo and text. As usual, new features need to be activated manually using certain flags, so don’t expect them to appear any time soon.
