The American version of Sailor Moon was so terrible that it was canceled after one episode

Sailor Moon is one of the most popular magical girl anime series. Together with the Sailor Warriors, Bunny (Usagi in the original) Tsukino faces the most dangerous opponents. The anime was produced in Japan at the time. But Toon Makers and Renaissance-Atlantic Entertainment had planned their own series based on the story of Sailor Moon.

What kind of version is this? The US version was also called Sailor Moon. It wasn’t created in the anime style, but in a cartoon look like we know from the 90s.

The story here is also based on the Sailor Warriors from the anime, even the useless Tuxedo Mask is there. However, the cast was designed a little differently than before:

  • Sailor Jupiter now has dark skin
  • Sailor Venus comes from Latin America
  • Sailor Mercury sits in a wheelchair
  • Sailor Mars remains the only Asian
  • Loona and Artemis were united into one white cat
  • The Sailor Warriors also race through space on windsurfing boards. The whole thing is accompanied by a soundtrack that could also be used as an advertisement for toothpaste. According to a YouTube video by Ray Mona, around $280,000 was invested in the pilot episode and an accompanying music video.

You can watch the pilot episode in the following video, which shows around ten minutes of the 17-minute episode:

Only a single pilot episode was created in 1994. Some of it consists of drawn scenes, the rest uses real actors. Even the Loona-Artemis fusion can be seen once as a drawn variant and once as a real cat.

The highlight of the episode is the transformation of the Sailor Warriors. Unfortunately, it’s shorter in the YouTube video than it is in the anime of the same name.

If you want to see a reboot of the original, you can watch Sailor Moon Crystal instead:

    Sailor Moon episode got laughs

How was the episode received? The episode was introduced with a two-minute opening intro at the 1995 Anime Expo. The audience is said to have burst out laughing, as a video recording on YouTube shows.

According to CBR, the production team had three more episodes in store, but the deal for a possible commission fell through. Instead, FOX simply dubbed the original anime into English.

Ultimately, the US series didn’t manage to get a pilot episode out. Unfortunately, you can currently only find the original on DVD and Blu-ray. There is currently no streaming service that offers the anime series.

It is currently also possible to watch all three Sailor Moon films on Joyn. Netflix also has the film Sailor Moon Eternal in its program. This is the fourth season of the reboot Sailor Moon Crystal.

Sailor Moon used to run on RTLZWEI in the lunchtime program. Another anime that was shown at the time is Digimon: Pokémon has been the biggest anime franchise for 27 years, but there was a time when Digimon was ahead
