The aircraft had taken off from Travis Air Force Base in California and had been in the air nonstop when it landed on Swedish soil at around 10:30 a.m., writes South Sweden.
But what it does in Sweden is unclear.
– I do not know. They have applied for and been granted permission to enter Swedish airspace and then land, says Fredrik Helmertz, on-duty communicator at the Armed Forces, to TT.
The C-5 Galaxy is manufactured by Lockheed Martin and first flew in 1968. It is 75 meters long and weighs just over 170 tons. 131 aircraft have been built.
Can carry 345 soldiers
The plane can be opened completely at tip and nose, which makes it possible to drive straight through the cargo area when loading the plane. It makes it easier when transporting several tanks – something that has free space in the cargo area.
Fully loaded, with a maximum weight of over 300 tons, the plane needs a take-off distance of 2.5 kilometers and a landing distance of 1.5 kilometers.
