Swiss Marco Odermatt on Saturday, the Austrian legend made incredible alpine skiing history when he overtook Andorra with his giant slalom victory by Hermann Maier the long-standing men’s world cup points record. Maier’s record was 2,000 points made 23 years ago.
The 25-year-old Odermatt scored 42 points better. The current point calculation system has been in use since the 1991–1992 season.
The women’s record is held by Slovenia Tina Mazen 2,414 from 2013. In addition to Maze and Odermatti, the American star has been able to surpass 2,000 points Mikaela Shiffrinwho set the all-time wins record (87) last week.
– Hermann Maier was my childhood idol. The fact that Odermatt is capable of such results at such a young age is amazing, Urheilu’s expert Marcus Sandell anneal.
For Odermatti, the victory was the 13th of the season and the seventh of the season in the giant slalom. The Swiss was in great shape this season, as he was on the podium no less than 22 times. With that, he equals the record with Maier.
– I don’t understand how I managed to win, because I was so tired. We celebrated hard on Thursday, Odermatt laughed of FIS (you switch to another service) according to the pages.
Grabbing the points record means a lot to Odermatti. Even reaching the top three would have been enough to break the record.
– Today was not easy because of that 2,000-point goal. I really wanted to be on the podium today. This means a lot, Odermatt admitted.
Like Pirlo and Zidane
In the super giant slalom, Odermatt won six times this World Cup season. Sandell says speed sports often require experience. The dominance of a 25-year-old athlete is indeed something extraordinary.
Odermatti’s high level is indicated by the fact that in the last two years he has always reached the top three in the giant slalom when he was on the competition slope.
On Sunday, Odermatt, who went down without a gesture, won by a wild margin of two seconds. Sandell compares the top scorer to European soccer legends.
– We have to hope that the man stays in shape. It’s really beautiful to look at. It’s kind of like what Zinedine Zidane and Andrea Pirlo have done on the football side. They’re all so motionless.
– He is able to manage each situation without making big mistakes. It’s just incredible.
Odermatt was already a marked name at a young age. He had won several championships in the World Junior Championships.
Sandell says Austrian and Swiss calculators tend to be more ready for adult circles. At the World Championships held in February, he won the championship in both giant slalom and super giant slalom.
– He is really ready to withstand pressure. Odermatt has remained quite intact, which is due to the calculation style. He counts in the same sure way as Shiffrin, Sandell says.
Sandell got to know Odermatt towards the end of his career.
– As a person, he is really down-to-earth and smart.
This season, Odermatt won the overall race, the super giant slalom and the giant slalom of the World Cup. Norway won the vault Aleksander Aamodt Kilde. The slalom cup will be decided on Sunday, when the men’s alpine skiing season culminates in Soldeu, Andorra. The 1st round of the slalom at 11:25 and the second round at 14:25.
