It has now been eight years since Klas Ingesson left us.
Then he was widely praised in connection with Elfsborg’s home match in the Allsvenskan.
Last Saturday, October 29, it was eight years since one of Swedish football’s biggest profiles left us. Klas Ingesson was one of the great heroes during the World Cup in 1994, but in his last years fought a tough battle against myeloma, a chronic blood cancer.
Eight years ago
The Swedish icon was hugely celebrated both at home in Sweden and abroad, especially in Bologna, where he had many fine years as one of the team’s biggest stars. Klas Ingesson was known as a real grater, someone who never gave up. He represented clubs such as IFK Gothenburg and KV Mechelen.
But he is also strongly associated with Elfsborg. Klas Ingesson coached Elfsborg in the 2013 and 2014 seasons, and the club often highlights how Klas Ingesson’s values still characterize the club. Ahead of the team’s last home game of this year’s Allsvenskan, and in connection with the anniversary of his passing, they also took the opportunity to properly pay tribute to him.

Nice tribute
Before the match against Helsingborg, a video was rolled with clips from Ingesson’s incredible career. Everything from the years in the national team, in Bologna, and all the tributes that were after his death.
“We want to preserve and highlight class values within IF Elfsborg. Every time we talk about Klas, tell about a memory or hold up a flag with his face on the stand, it is an example of moments when he is with us in everyday life. Kla’s memory will always live on and the association will always be marked by his spirit and values,” the club writes on its website.
After Klas Ingesson’s death, Elfsborg also formed the Hedra Klas Ingesson foundation, where private individuals can “support, stimulate and reward interests to develop IF Elfsborg in the spirit of Klas Ingesson”. Elfsborg won the match against Helsingborg, who were already ready to leave the series, with 3-0.
