Tougher financial situation for many households
Despite rising rents and cost increases, the income limit for housing benefit has not changed since 2021. This means that more households no longer qualify for the benefit, even if their financial situation has not improved.
According to The tenant association the grant, which received its current form in 1997, risks disappearing completely within a few years.
– I think it’s terrible. With today’s inequality, housing allowance is needed more than ever before, says Martin Hofverbergchairman of the Tenants’ Association, to Swedish Radio.

Then the housing benefit can disappear completely
The tenants’ association believes that the housing allowance is crucial to reducing inequality in the housing market, especially for young people and families with children. Now the association warns that the income limits in 2030 will be so tight that only people with financial assistance will be able to receive housing allowance, and as early as 2035 the allowance may be completely gone if nothing changes.
– This is what happens when you don’t have indexed systems, says Martin Hofverberg.
