The immigration bill arrives Monday, November 6 in the Senate. Subject of tension for political parties: the abolition of AME, state medical aid, which allows access to care, free of charge, for foreigners in an irregular situation.
The AME is considered too expensive according to the right-wing opposition parties, which Olivier Véran, government spokesperson and former doctor, contested, and who recalls that prevention is less expensive than treating it too late. On the other hand, a recent report from Médecins du Monde revealed that few people entitled to it actually benefited from it.
One of the reasons for this is that the AME is above all an obstacle course. To obtain it, you must, for example, prove your presence on French territory for at least three months. Those who embark on this difficult path often live in extreme precariousness.
